Friday, 11 August 1735  Peine fort et Dur (Derby Mercury)

John Weekes (commonly called the Dumb Man) found guilty on an indictment for standing mute through malice.  He was sentenced to Peine fort et dur, under which he died.  He had refused to plead to an indictment charging him with the murder of Elizabeth Symmonds, by cutting her throat with a knife, in the parish of Fittleworth on 14th May 1735.  I think this is the last recorded case of the sentence being carried out to death.
